<text>The Johannes was an emigrant ship sailing from Bremen to Baltimore in 1861. The ship ran aground in the bay between Newark and Tresness. Luckily all 137 passengers and crew came ashore safely. They were distributed among various farms where they resided for a month until another vessel was dispatched from Germany for the emigrants to continue their journey. As a thank you to the island they left behind their ship’s bell. This hung for many years in the bell tower of the Cross Kirk.
