<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre is a hub for people to meet, share ideas, learn new skills and experience exhibitions and events that are imaginative and stimulating. The island location and environment are very important to the work we do, the place, the Gaelic language, culture and heritage are part of our identity. We have regular visual art, moving image and heritage exhibitions, we have live music events, art classes for children and adults, writers groups and events and a new Education & Outreach programme. Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre is a partnership between Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath and the Uist Art Association. The two voluntary organisations formed Taigh Chearsabhagh Trust in 1993 and over several years have created a thriving museum and arts centre that has much to offer to visitors and the local community. Located in Lochmaddy, the main port of entry to North Uist, Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre is located on the shoreline of a marine Special Area of Conservation. The sea and sky directly influence the artistic and cultural life of Taigh Chearsabhagh. Inspired by our unique island location we have a vibrant and stimulating exhibition, event and outreach programme going on throughout the year at Taigh Chearsabhagh.]]></dcterms:description>

Through a Glass Darkly is a project involving colleagues in the School of Classics (Rebecca Sweetman and Ioannis Georganas) and the Museum of the University of St Andrews, MUSA (Alison Hafield and Hannah Sycamore) which stems from research into changing perceptions material culture according to the medium in which it is experienced. From this research project we have designed a number of practical applications which have been rolled out to help inform museum curatorial decision making processes as well as support education in schools and museums. Our work is funded by the Leventis Foundation and the University of St Andrews.

    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[The Terrarium]]></dcterms:title>
<dcterms:description><![CDATA[Shezad Dawood works across disciplines including film, painting, neon, sculpture and Virtual Reality to deconstruct systems of image, language, site and narrative. His practice often involves collaboration and knowledge exchange, mapping across geographic borders and communities. Dawood is well known for Leviathan, a five-year multifaceted project exploring three urgent issues of our time: climate change, migration and mental health.

The Terrarium highlights the implications of climate change for marine ecosystems, and the consequences of rising sea levels, incorporating references to the Baltic and Kent coastlines. The VR experience transports you 300 years into the future where the surface of Planet Earth is 90% water. Transformed into a sophisticated cephalopod hybrid and released from a laboratory into the open seas, you are unexpectedly captured by future humans engaged in the pillaging of the planet.

The VR is accompanied by a wall painting that references the sound mirrors that punctuate the Kent landscape and signal a motif of listening: audiences are sonically immersed in Shifter: The Terrarium Triad, a new musical score by British composer Graham Fitkin that explores the “shifting baseline syndrome”. This theory suggests each generation makes an unconscious shift in expectation of what a healthy ecosystem looks like and explores our difficulty in perceiving how ecological, cultural or behavioural norms change over time.

The Terrarium is curated and commissioned by UP Projects for Creative Folkestone Triennial 2021 and Kai Art Center and is supported by CUPIDO, a project co-funded by the European Union, Arts Council England and Tallinn Culture Department. VR, duration variable, (featuring parts of Anthropocene Island TAB17 by ecoLogicStudio and excerpts from The Terrarium Inventory by Graham Fitkin). <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Iain Crawford, a passionate archaeologist and ethnographer who was influenced by the writings of Erskine Beveridge, decided to concentrate his searches in the 1960s on sites that might have been continuously inhabited over a very long period and yet remained visible. He wanted to get a clearer picture of daily life and work from the Mesolithic, through to the Bronze and Iron Ages, onwards as close to the present day as possible. The two main sandhills at Udal, North and South, gradually provided him with settlement remains which represent the rarity and importance of this site. The Udal South Mound revealed evidence of two stone built round houses or 'wheelhouses', now extremely vulnerable to the elements. Pottery shards, stone tools and some bronze and metal items, held by Glasgow University, show evidence of habitation from the Late Bronze Age through to the Late Iron Age. The Udal North Mound takes the period of settlement up to Viking and Mediaeval times and the finds include jewellery and a Norse gold coin of Harald Hardrada. There is evidence of continuous settlement through to the 19th century and much more exciting excavation remains to be researched by the Udal project on this site of major historical significance.]]></dcterms:description>
