The main site is closed for major renovations until 2020, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Orkney Islands Council, Historic Environment Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Museums Galleries Scotland and LEADER. During this period, there is a temporary exhibition in the Hoy Hotel, Lyness, half a mile from the ferry terminal and adjacent to the Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery. The exhibition is a great first stop for visitors to the island and has lots of information on all the other activities and attractions available on Hoy. Visitors can virtually explore the main site via a 360-degree touch screen photo presentation, as well as finding out all about the history of Scapa Flow during two world wars. During the closure period, The Orkney Museum in Kirkwall will be displaying a changing selection of objects from the wartime collection. From April – October there are regular guided walks around the remains of the former naval base, led by museum staff. Booking is advised, and there is a charge for the walk.]]></dcterms:description>

The conditions under which they operated, the difficulties of crossing the North Sea at night, with no lights and far from any possible help, can scarcely be imagined today. Always present in the minds of those on board would have been the threat of discovery and the risk of being shot at by German planes or boats, and possibly captured when they finally reached the Norwegian coast. Pictures, words and some audio files are available on this website, so please feel free to look around. A waltz (a 792k WAV file) was even written in honour of the extraordinary achievements. <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Today the remains of the St Andrews Cathedral, overlooking the north sea at the edge of Fife only hint at a historic past. 700 years ago the building was one of the largest and most impressive religious buildings in Europe. The building of this once magnificent structure began in 1160. The construction of the cathedral did not run smoothly, as a short time after the nave was completed in 1270, the west end of the cathedral was blown down in a gale. It was then rebuilt in a slightly different position, further east. During his occupation in the Wars of Independence in 1296, Edward the I of England ordered the part built roof to be stripped of lead to make ammunition. The Cathedral was finally completed in 1318, when on the 5th of July it was consecrated in the presence of King Robert Bruce, who, according to legend rode up the aisle on his horse. Just 60 years later, in 1378 the cathedral choir and transepts were badly damaged by fire and they needed to be extensively rebuilt. In 1409 came another great storm and the collapse of the cathedral’s south transept. By 11th June 1559 during the reformation, the cathedral’s days were numbered, incited by the preaching of John Knox an attack was made on the Cathedral by a Protestant mob and the interior of the building destroyed. The Cathedral fell into decline following the attack and became a source of building material for the town and latterly a burial ground.]]></dcterms:description>
